Learn about the Bartram Trail Scenic Highway

State Road 13 (SR13) winds its way along the St. Johns River, in St. Johns County through pine and palmetto barrens, oak hammocks and swamps, and under moss draped trees. It stretches from the Julington Creek Bridge at the County line south for about 17 miles to Ward’s Creek.

New Greenbriar Library & Park!

Folks – I attended a County Groundbreaking Ceremony today for a new park and new library on Greenbriar near Longleaf Pine.  A very happy ceremony to celebrate new amenities for our residents here in the Northwest County. My attached picture is a little dim, but I’m sure the County will post a very bright and colorful one soon and we can post that.

Included in this groundbreaking today was a new branch library, which may bring some relief to the high volume use of our Bartram Trail Branch Library, and may open some possibilities for a Bartram Education Center and Gardens that our Scenic Highway Master Plan identifies.  I had good conversations with our Library Director and Branch Manager about that, and they’d like to talk more.

I also had an excellent conversation with County Commissioner Christian Whitehurst and our Parks and Rec Director, Ryan Kane, who do want to learn more about the Scenic Highway and about the future Bartram-named parks, gardens, and boating / hiking / biking trails also in our Scenic Highway Master Plan.

Good conversations today and happy times as the County is building new amenities for families and residents.

Westminster Woods & WBSHH Master Gardeners Meeting

Dear Folks – Yesterday, I had the great pleasure of visiting Westminster Woods Senior Center with our William Bartram Scenic & Historic Highway Master Gardeners, and we met with, walked with, and talked with their Gardening Committee leaders about new gardens and flowers we could plant together. How fun and refreshing everything was.

The Westminster committee will identify numerous spots for gardens around the campus, and our Master Gardeners will then advise on native plants that will grow best and thrive there. Our Master Gardeners will then present plans to the Scenic Highway Board (and very likely modest costs), and with that funding, work on those gardens and work our new friendships with these wonderful seniors can begin.

I am so proud that our Scenic Highway group is looking for ways to be active in the community, and I think William Bartram himself would be so happy that gardens and flowers are a way that we are doing that.

I’m really looking forward to all of this,
Joe

“With all the development in St Johns County, it’s imperative that we preserve the history of the area for future generations. I’m proud to be a member of the William Bartram Trail Scenic Highway. My husband grew up here and my daughter is now growing up here. My hope is that our grandchildren will have the opportunity to enjoy learning about the history of the area.
